Pfizer Inc. said on Wednesday it will donate more than $500 million to the NHS over the sale of Zithromax tablets to the public.
Zithromax, which treats bacterial infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, is prescribed to treat a variety of illnesses, including skin and soft tissue infections, ear infections and sinus infections.
The NHS said it will provide Zithromax tablets to the public and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in a bid to protect the public from misuse.
The move comes just weeks after Pfizer announced it was stepping down its direct-to-consumer marketing division, which specialises in pharmaceutical products. The move is expected to bolster the company's efforts to attract consumers to the drug.
The NICE said it will advise patients on how to use Zithromax tablets, as well as its effects, to reduce the risk of side effects and ensure the drug is used as prescribed.
